Senior Highway Engineer

Senior Highway Engineers provide the expertise of a seasoned engineer to all conventional aspects of functional area and applies advanced concepts and techniques to unconventional engineering problems. Senior highway engineers may also function as individual researcher or technical specialist. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.

Other responsibilities typically include:

  • Performs Highway project design, sketching design concepts to be developed by junior engineers, CAD designers or technicians.
  • Plans and reviews the production of engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Plans and reviews the production of engineering investigations or planning work.
  • Develops and evaluates plans and criteria for new projects, weighing alternatives and selecting the most cost-effective solution.
  • Analyzes technical problems, assessing the feasibility of proposed techniques and procedures, and devising new approaches and alternative solutions.
  • Analyzes project dimension and scope, and prepares or oversees the preparation of cost and manpower estimates, schedules and job budgets.
  • Coordinates work with project manager, and guides junior professionals and technical personnel on the design and drafting of preliminary and final plans.
  • Is responsible for quality control, maintaining quality standards in all work produced, and checking computations or reviewing designs and drawings performed by others.
  • May occasionally manage projects.
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.

Highway Engineer

The Roadway Design Engineer prepares plans and specifications for roadway construction and improvement projects. Before a road structure can be designed, the Engineer must determine the exact route the road will take, how many lanes are needed, how this road interfaces with other roads, and how the flow of traffic will be maintained. Design of the roadway system involves many considerations including safety, parking, traffic calming, pedestrian and bike paths, drainage, highway signs, road markings, signal systems, roadway lighting, impact attenuators, and guide rails. The Roadway Design Engineer conducts traffic studies, participates in public meetings, writes technical reports, and conducts construction analyses.

Other responsibilities typically include:

  • Performing roadway geometric design for horizontal and vertical alignment from preliminary to final design.
  • Preparing technical designs in accordance with design standards using roadway design software.
  • Preparing plan and specification documents including base sheet, details, quantities, special provisions, and estimates.
  • Coordinating with reviewers to ensure accuracy and quality of work.
  • Managing and maintaining project documentation.
  • Design systems or structures using sustainable materials, such as porous pavement or bioretention structures.
  • Preparing design for drainage and runoff.
  • Preparing designs that do not damage natural plant and wildlife environments.

Pavement Engineer

A Pavement Engineer designs, evaluates and manages asphalt and concrete pavement systems. The Engineer determines the pavement layer thicknesses and material composition required based on the traffic load. The Engineer collects and reviews data on existing pavements to assess deterioration and remaining service life. They understand how external conditions change the rate of pavement degradation over time. The Pavement Engineer sets the immediate and long-term repair and maintenance strategies.

Other duties typically include:

  • Design pavements according to the AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG).
  • Develop specifications for pavement construction projects.
  • Observe pavement construction and collect material samples for quality testing.
  • Test pavement materials to determine compliance to specifications or standards.
  • Inspect completed roadways to ensure safety and compliance with applicable standards or regulations.
  • Analyze nondestructive falling weight deflectometer (FWD) deflection measurements.
  • Work with others to develop pavement rehabilitation plans and designs.
  • Work with others to implement a pavement management system.
  • Reviewing concrete and asphalt Superpave mix design data.
  • Design drainage, erosion, or sedimentation control systems for transportation projects.
  • Develop plans to deconstruct damaged or obsolete roadways or other transportation structures in a manner that is environmentally sound or prepares the land for sustainable development.

Senior Pavement Engineer

Senior Pavement Engineers develop, plan, organize, and carry out pavement evaluations and investigations, and geotechnical investigations for municipal roadway/infrastructure projects while applying practical knowledge of pavement management, engineering, and condition assessments. Also, Engineers provide technical supervision of field inspection and testing staff at construction sites and in the office, perform senior review of detailed engineering analysis, design, and reporting for assigned projects, and participate in internal and external project meetings, prepare proposals, and make presentations and participate in business development initiatives. This position typically includes work at airports, highways, roads, and parking lots.

Traffic System Supervisor

A Traffic System Supervisor supervises staff, coordinates and supervises the organization and operational activities for the repair, maintenance, installation of traffic lights and signal systems and/or electronic equipment installation of traffic lights and signal systems. Traffic System Supervisors participates in the implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities; recommends and implements resulting policies and procedures. This position also entails identifying opportunities for improving traffic signal and street lighting repair, maintenance, and installation. Supervisors regularly coordinate, plan, and review the work plan for assigned light and signal systems operations and activities. Finally, Traffic System Supervisors communicate with utility companies regarding future construction, installation, and repair of streetlights and traffic signals while coordinating equipment and material needs and allocates resources efficiently and effectively.

Senior Project Manager

A Senior Project Manager is responsible for the quality of civil engineering work performed, client service, utilization of staff, marketing, reputation of the office, contract management, billing collection, and project profitability for roadway engineering projects. Project Managers also plan, direct, and coordinate activities of transportation projects to ensure that goals or objectives of these projects are accomplished within prescribed time frame and funding parameters. This position also entails establishing work plans and multi-disciplinary staffing for each phase of project and arranges for recruitment or assignment of project personnel, and directing and coordinating activities of Project Engineers, Engineers, and Technicians to ensure project progresses on schedule and within prescribed budget. Also, Senior Project Managers oversee work involving the preparation of roadway and highway planning and design using local (State, County or City) standards at both conceptual and final design levels. Finally, Senior Project Managers represent their organizations as representatives at meetings, presentations, and public hearings/reviews relative to assigned projects. Finally, a Senior Project Manager assures that project team complies with the contract agreement as well as exercises rigid cost control to implement the approved design within established budget restraints.
