Ensuring the quality of e-shopping specialty foods through efficient logistics service

Abstract:

The complementary effect produced by e-commerce integrated with home delivery service creates tremendous opportunities. These opportunities enable marketers to develop new services, allowing online shoppers to not only shorten their order cycle time but also allowing them multiple options to satisfy their shopping desires. Some studies have been performed to examine the issue of new service development (NSD) in an emerging market, but research is lacking on the development of home delivery services (HDS) for specialty foods from traditional markets. This study analyzes a Taiwan's home delivery company and uses an NSD model and quality function deployment (QFD) to develop a home delivery service model. In the voice of customer (VOC) area, the results reveal that online shoppers emphasize the security of personal information and trading mechanisms of that information. As for HDS for specialty foods from traditional markets, online shoppers focus on the speed of the delivery service, the freshness of the foods and quick responses from HD companies when problems occur during delivery. Furthermore, in the voice of engineering (VOE) area, the main suggestions for improvement are training staff, setting up a brand, and strengthening system effectiveness and information safety.

Transportation and Urban Form – Stages in the Spatial Evolution of the American Metropolis

Abstract:

The movement of people, goods, and information within the local metropolitan area is critically important to the functioning of cities. This chapter reviews the U.S. urban experience of the past two-centuries and traces a persistently strong relationship between the intraurban transportation system and the spatial form and organization of the metropolis. Following an overview of the cultural foundations of urbanism in the United States, the chapter then introduces a four-stage model of intrametropolitan transport eras and associated growth patterns. Within that framework, it becomes clear that a distinctive spatial structure dominated each stage of urban transportation development and that geographical re-organization swiftly followed the break-through in movement technology that launched the next era of metropolitan expansion. Finally, the chapter briefly considers the contemporary scene, both as an evolutionary composite of the past and as a dynamic arena where new forces ma already be forging a decidedly different future.

Modelling Peak-hour Urban Freight Movements with Limited Data Availability

Abstract:

Modelling the complexity of urban freight transport requires large amounts of data related to supply chain management, delivery practices, tour configuration, time windows, etc., but when all this detailed data is not available local authorities still need models that represent this type of transport and its contribution to congestion and environmental impacts. We present here an improvement on other recent works, consisting of a demand model for B2B and home deliveries during the morning peak hour that uses only very limited data to estimate the number of delivery vehicles entering and leaving each zone of the city. We then calculate the trip distribution using an entropy maximization approach, and solve the resulting model using simulated annealing. We apply this model to a case study in the city of Seville, in Spain, and compare its results to those produced by a gravity model, and with actual traffic counts.

Relevance of city logistics modeling efforts

Abstract:

In this paper the authors present a review of city logistics modeling efforts reported in the literature for urban freight analysis. The review is based on an extensive search in the academic literature. The authors position the contributions in a framework that takes into account the diversity and complexity found in the present-day city logistics practice. Next, this paper covers the different aspects in the modeling selection process that includes (1) the stakeholders involved in the model (2) the objective behind the modeling (3) the defining criteria i.e., the descriptor for modeling purpose and (4) the tool used for achieving objective with the help of descriptor, i.e. the perceptive. The authors argue that such factors are evidently demonstrating forces behind urban freight transportation and thus are far more determinative for carrying out urban freight modeling. In the discussion and overview the authors take these situational factors as the starting point for categorizing and evaluating the city logistics modeling literature. The review analyzes the trends of city logistics modeling research in terms of its relevance to city logistics problems and attempts to identify missing links in modeling urban freight domain.

GPS data analysis for understanding urban goods movement

Abstract:

This paper aims to investigate the contribution of GPS survey techniques for urban goods movement characterization and diagnosis, more precisely the implementation and application issues related to the introduction of real-time data transmission procedures and phone tools with integrated GPS devices. We propose a GPS-based data collection method for urban freight route characterization using a Smartphone application. After testing and calibrating the data processing tool, we analyze the main results on a baseline of about 900 rounds, with the R software. This analysis allows us to define the characteristics of the overall routes as well as the environmental impacts linked with the categories of roads: urban highways, main roads and residential streets. Moreover, the study shows that the environmental behavior of the driver is connected with the main activity of the carriers. The complementarity between GPS and traditional urban freight surveys is finally discussed.

Urban Passenger-Only Ferry Systems: Issues, Opportunities and Technologies

Abstract:

Increasing traffic load and urban sprawl have created a call for new passenger-only ferry systems in a number of urban areas, notably San Francisco. Urban ferry systems have traditionally been favored by environmental advocacy organizations and progressive land use and transportation planners. Ferry systems can offer a wide range of benefits. However, recent proposals have encountered unanticipated opposition based on perceived problems in these areas. There are also new technologies and other changes that may offer new opportunities and challenges. As a result, modern trends in speeds, propulsion systems and layout of both vessels and terminals may change significantly with the next generation of ferries. Primarily examining the San Francisco Bay Area as a case history in progress, the authors examine how these developments and new concepts of public transit efficiency, emissions, land use and system integration play key roles in the political viability of new ferry service, and how these considerations ultimately reflect back on the vessels themselves by imposing new sets of design constraints. Some short-term solutions are proposed, and long-term predictions for the shape of the mid- 21st Century urban ferry are presented.

Is road pricing effective in abating pollution? Evidence from Milan

Abstract:

The authors estimate the effect of a road pricing policy introduced in Milan in 2008 on concentrations of benzene, carbon monoxide, particulates, nitrogen dioxide and Sulphur dioxide. The authors found a sizeable effect of the Ecopass on air quality in terms of reduction in the concentration of carbon monoxide and particulates a few days after its introduction, although this effect disappeared after only one week. The authors interpret these results as indicative of an inefficient policy design: motorbikes were not charged and the treated area is too limited to generate positive outcomes for the whole city. Further evidence from a natural experiment given by a temporary suspension of the charge in 2012 confirms the authors' hypothesis on the incentives for motorbike usage.
