Decision Support System for Real-Time Urban Freight Management

Abstract:

The urban network is a highly dynamic system. Thus, a modern and efficient fleet management in urban areas should account for dynamics of traffic conditions and variability in travel times, since they significantly affect the distribution of goods and the provision of services. For the proficient dynamic fleet management decisions it is proper instead of relying exclusively on the experience of a dispatcher, to base the freight management decisions on information provided by a professional Decision Support System (DSS), which facilitates the consideration of all the factors conditioning the addressed problem. This paper provides a proposal of such DSS for real-time freight management. Its design is based on integration of selected pickup and delivery vehicle routing model and dynamic traffic simulation models, which objective is to carefully emulate the evolving traffic conditions. The optimal dynamic routing and scheduling of a vehicle fleet is obtained due to dynamic modifications of the current routing and scheduling plan on the basis of the newly revealed information conditioning the addressed problem.

Improving Urban Freight Transport Sustainability by Carriers- Best Practices from The Netherlands and the EU Project CityLog

Abstract:

Carriers face serious challenges in making their urban freight transport efficient and sustainable. Local authorities claim that many carriers are not innovative and do not cooperate in improving their city logistics operations. There are three solution directions to make urban freight transport more efficient and more sustainable: policy, technology and logistics. Carriers can use logistical and technical solutions. In this paper several best practices and carrier initiatives are presented that are actually brought in practice (in the Netherlands) to improve city logistics. It depends on the type of carrier, either a regional or functional specialist or a generalist, which solution can be effectively used in the urban freight transport operations.

Can California Meet the Education Demands of Tomorrow’s Economy

Abstract:

Notes that the amount of hired skilled workers will decline from the percentage it was in during 2000. Claims that there is a mismatch on the amount of hired, educated, skilled workers and the total state population. Claims that funding for education seems to be a driving force for this miss-match, and in order to solve the problem, something has got to give

A traffic assignment model for a ridesharing transportation market

Abstract:

A nascent ridesharing industry is being enabled by new communication technologies and motivated by the many possible benefits, such as reduction in travel cost, pollution, and congestion. Understanding the complex relations between ridesharing and traffic congestion is a critical step in the evaluation of a ridesharing enterprise or of the convenience of regulatory policies or incentives to promote ridesharing. In this work, we propose a new traffic assignment model that explicitly represents ridesharing as a mode of transportation. The objective is to analyze how ridesharing impacts traffic congestion, how people can be motivated to participate in ridesharing, and conversely, how congestion influences ridesharing, including ridesharing prices and the number of drivers and passengers. This model is built by combining a ridesharing market model with a classic elastic demand Wardrop traffic equilibrium model. Our computational results show that: (1) the ridesharing base price influences the congestion level, (2) within a certain price range, an increase in price may reduce the traffic congestion, and (3) the utilization of ridesharing increases as the congestion increases.

Logistics Master Planning for the City of Seoul

Abstract:

This study develops the main strategies and action plans for the goals of establishing sustainable logistics systems in the city of Seoul. It suggests diverse urban freight policies by logistics function as well as by transportation mode in order to enhance the logistics competitiveness and efficiency and to improve the urban freight systems of the Seoul Metropolitan Area for 10 years from 2011 to 2020. They include prioritizing and allocating resources in logistics infrastructure development, expanding the integrated logistics networks to other cities and regions, introducing the logistics consolidation strategy, and promoting the logistics information system.
