New urban goods distribution systems

Abstract:

Urban goods distribution is essential for the prosperity of urban areas but at the same time poses problems related to the environment, traffic safety and accessibility. One way to overcome these problems is to implement a totally new designed logistical system that optimizes the efficiency from a business as well as societal perspective. The new system is based on physically separating intra-city transport from goods transport outside the cities. This opens the opportunity of optimizing both intra and 'inter' urban goods transport systems independently. Within urban areas lightweight, small, highly maneuverable, noiseless, safe and low-emission vehicles can be used. And in the further future, maybe underground goods distribution systems. Outside cities larger trucks (up to road-train combinations), rail transport and in some cases even shipping can be used. The system requires a physical transfer, somewhere at the frames of a city (or in a region). Such a physical transfer is normally regarded as an important disadvantage as it is time consuming, costly, and inserts additional risk factors in the process. This disadvantage can be reduced by using standardized load units and by automating transshipment processes. Further more, the transshipment should be integrated neatly in adapted logistical systems. Thus far, most initiatives on improving urban distribution have been more or less 'stand alone' solutions and often have failed. The proposed new system should incorporate various cities and regions and should be supported by private and public parties.

A study on introduction plans for logistics consolidation in the major economic regions based on the survey

Abstract:

Even though logistics consolidation concepts and strategies had been early introduced, inactive policy means and insufficient business models have hindered the actual development and fulfillment of effective logistics consolidation in Korea. This study suggests revitalization strategy for the already-built logistics consolidation centers, private-public collaboration program, and various role business models by benchmarking several Japanese and European cases as well as by conducting actual condition survey in Korea. It stresses the role of government in promoting the use of logistics consolidation centers, building and enhancing the partnership between public and private sectors, and developing feasible projects. Another main outcome of this study is the master plan of logistics consolidation projects in Korea.

Objectives, Methods and Results of Surveys Carried out in the field of Urban Freight Transport: An International Comparison

Abstract:

In industrialized countries, the number of studies and surveys in the field of urban goods movement (UGM) has increased considerably over recent years. This paper compares the objectives, methods and results in this sector and focuses on nine industrialized countries of Europe, America and Asia. This non_extensive review shows that in spite of different framework methods and models, similar trends emerge at the economic and environmental levels. It is necessary to take into account urban logistics in the broadest meaning of the term. Cooperative action seems to bear fruit providing that information and dialogue take place in the long_term with all the operators involved. The development of intelligent transport systems (ITS) and better management of urban facilities may improve these attempts. We present our viewpoint in order to shed light on research oriented towards the sustainable management of urban logistics.
